Portugal sets two financial requirements for the D7, both updated annually.

  • 1.Ongoing income: €920/month for the main applicant, +€460/month for a spouse (50%), and +€276/month per dependent child (30%).
  • 2.Bank deposit: The equivalent of one full year's income must be held in a Portuguese bank account at the time of application — €11,040 for the main applicant, +€5,520 for a spouse, and +€3,312 per child.

The 2026 minimum is €920 per month (€11,040/year) for the main applicant, plus 50% for a spouse (€460/month) and 30% per dependent child (€276/month). You must also show savings in a Portuguese bank account equal to at least 12 months of the threshold — €11,040 for a single applicant, €16,560 for a couple.

Qualifying passive income includes state and private pensions, rental income, dividends from shares or funds, royalties, and interest. Salaries, freelance contracts, and self-employment income do not count — if your income comes from active work, the D8 Digital Nomad Visa or D2 Entrepreneur Visa is the correct route.

Yes — the D7 is Portugal's primary retirement visa. A state or private pension meeting the €920/month threshold qualifies directly. If you want residency with minimal stay obligations, the Golden Visa (7 days/year) is the better route.

Yes. Permanent residency is available after 5 years of legal residence. Under the Nationality Law in force since May 2026, citizenship requires 10 years of residence (7 for EU/CPLP nationals) counted from your first residence card, plus A2 Portuguese and a civic test.
