What should I know before choosing a Portugal visa?

What if I have pension or passive income?

The D7 may fit people with regular passive income such as pensions, rents, dividends, interest or royalties. The legal means of subsistence benchmark is set by Portaria 1563/2007 at 100% of the minimum wage for the first adult, 50% for each additional adult and 30% for each child or dependent adult child. With the 2026 minimum wage of €920, the monthly references are €920, €460 and €276. For D7 applicants relying on a pension or own income, the means must be secured for at least 12 months. The law does not require a fixed lump sum in a Portuguese bank account.

What if I work remotely?

The D8 may fit an employee or freelancer performing remote work for an employer or clients outside Portugal. In 2026, the legal test requires average monthly income over the previous three months of at least four times the mainland minimum wage, which is €3,680.

If your work is carried out as an independent professional activity in Portugal rather than remotely for foreign employers or clients, the D2 may be the better route. See Regulatory Decree 84/2007 and our D8 guide.

What if I am an entrepreneur or freelancer?

The D2 covers independent professional activity and immigrant entrepreneur activity. There is no legal minimum investment for the D2, and a company is not required for the independent professional track.

What if none of D7, D8 or D2 fits?

Portugal has other residence routes. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to consider highly qualified activity, family reunification, Startup Visa, employment, study or investment residence.

What are the requirements for a Portugal residence visa?

Requirements depend on the residence route and your circumstances. General national visa documentation is set by Portuguese rules, while individual consulates and VFS centres may publish additional checklist instructions for applicants in their jurisdiction.

InsuranceFor a national visa, valid travel insurance must cover necessary medical expenses including urgent assistance and repatriation. The €30,000 minimum used for Schengen short stay visas is not a national visa rule.
Purpose of residenceEvidence supporting your specific route, such as remote work, passive income, professional activity, business activity or a qualifying family relationship.

What if a document is missing?

Do I need a NIF or Portuguese bank account before my visa application?

A Portuguese NIF and bank account are not legal requirements for a residence visa. In practice, some consular and VFS checklists request one or both for particular routes, and we recommend arranging them where they support the application or your move.

How does the Portugal visa application process work?

The exact procedure varies by visa and jurisdiction, but most residence visa applications follow the same broad sequence.

NIF and bank account preparation

Where appropriate, we assist with NIFs for adult applicants and one joint Portuguese bank account for the adults in the application.

VFS or consular submission

Visa decision

The legal decision deadline for a residence visa is 60 days, although individual cases can take longer where further information or procedural steps are required. The standard national residence visa fee is €110 as of October 2026, with statutory exemptions for some applicants and visa types. See the official visa fee information.

Travel to Portugal

A residence visa is valid for four months and allows two entries. After approval, you travel to Portugal within the visa's validity and proceed to the residence permit stage.

AIMA residence stage

Residence visa holders normally have an AIMA appointment prebooked when the visa is issued. Complete does not include lawyer filing or accompaniment at the AIMA appointment; that support is included in Complete Plus.

After Visa Approval

What happens after my Portugal visa is approved?

Travel to Portugal

Your residence visa allows you to enter Portugal and proceed to the residence permit stage during the visa's four month validity period.

AIMA residence process

For residence visa holders, the AIMA appointment is normally prebooked when the visa is issued. If an appointment needs to be requested separately, AIMA accepts requests through its official channels. Booking an AIMA appointment itself is free. See the AIMA contact form.

AIMA documents and fee

You provide the documents required for your residence route at the AIMA stage. As of October 2026, the standard rate for a first temporary residence permit is €247.30. The reduced total of €185.60 applies where the 25% reduction is available, including digital applications and, until the relevant service is available digitally, applications made in person. Complete versus Complete Plus

Complete provides support through the visa stage but does not include lawyer filing or in person accompaniment at AIMA. Complete Plus adds lawyer filing and accompaniment for the AIMA appointment, subject to the Plus package terms.

Family

Can my spouse and children move to Portugal with me?

Often, yes. The correct procedure depends on the principal applicant's route, the family relationship and whether the family applies together or uses family reunification later.

We review the relationship evidence and determine whether an accompanying family application or later family reunification procedure applies.

Dependent children

Dependent children can qualify under the applicable family rules. Dependent minor or incapable children are also among the categories exempt from the general family reunification waiting period.

Other family members

Parents and other relatives have additional eligibility and dependency conditions and do not qualify automatically.

Applying together can be important. Eligible family members can apply for accompanying residence visas at the same time as the main applicant under Article 58(5) of Law 23/2007. If family reunification is used later, the sponsor generally must have held a valid residence permit for at least two years. This is reduced to 15 months for a spouse or equivalent partner who cohabited with the residence permit holder for at least 18 months in the period immediately before the holder entered Portugal. There is no waiting period for dependent minors or incapable dependants, or for a spouse or equivalent partner who, together with the permit holder, is the parent or adopter of a dependent minor or incapable person. Families of holders of residence permits for highly qualified activity, investment residence and the EU Blue Card are also exempt. See Law 23/2007 and our 2026 family reunification guide.

There is no guaranteed total processing time. Document preparation, appointment availability, requests for further information and the residence stage can all affect the overall time.

Complete includes visa determination, NIF assistance for adult applicants, assistance with one joint bank account for all adults, document review and guidance, unlimited email support, video calls with a Portuguese immigration lawyer, VFS or consulate appointment assistance and a live interpreter for the visa interview.

Government and third party costs are separate from the package price. As of October 2026, the standard national residence visa fee is €110, with statutory exemptions for some applicants and visa types, and AIMA's standard first temporary residence permit fee is €247.30. Other separate costs can include criminal record certificates, apostilles or legalisation, translations, insurance, bank charges and travel where applicable.

What if my Portugal visa application has a problem?

My appointment is unavailable

Appointment systems and availability vary by jurisdiction. Complete includes VFS or consulate appointment assistance, and we explain the applicable submission route and available next steps.

A document is not accepted

We review the issue and advise whether the document can be corrected, replaced or supplemented before you proceed.

My application is delayed

Processing can extend beyond the normal legal deadline in individual cases. We can help you understand the procedural position and any request received from the authorities.

My circumstances changed

A change in income, employment, address, family situation or business plans may affect the application and should be reviewed before you proceed.

My visa was refused

A refusal needs individual legal review. Depending on the decision and applicable law, the available options can include responding to the decision, an appeal, a new application or a different route. Any legal work outside the Complete package scope should be agreed separately.

I am already in Portugal

The correct procedure depends on your current immigration status and circumstances. A process available to an applicant abroad may not be available in the same form after arrival.
