Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

The D8 visa is very different from other work visas that are based on employment. It is not like the D7 passive income visa; it is for people who work remotely.

To get the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must show proof of their eligibility. You need to show that you make at least €3,680 a month from outside the country. Proof of health insurance and a place to stay are also important. The visa makes it easy to get permanent residency.

Who Can Get the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa?

This visa is open to people from outside the EU who are 18 years old or older. You can only work from home for businesses or clients that are not in Portugal.

From 2026, the minimum gross monthly income will be €3,680. This is four times the minimum wage in Portugal, which is €920. Family applications need more money than the minimum amounts.

The Digital Nomad Visa is Great For:

  • Great for remote workers: People who have contracts that let them work from anywhere in the world. This includes full-time employees who work for foreign companies from home.

  • Freelancers: Independent professionals who work for clients all over the world and make a steady income. Applications are stronger when they have steady income for three to six months.

  • Digital entrepreneurs: People who run businesses that make money from online activities in other countries. This group includes people who run e-commerce sites and people who start SaaS companies.

  • Content creators: Professionals who can show that they make money from international platforms. YouTubers, bloggers, and influencers can meet the requirements if they have the right paperwork.

The Digital Nomad Visa is NOT For:

  • Job seekers: People who want to find work in Portugal. The D8 visa needs proof of income from outside the country.

  • Low-income applicants: People who can't show that they make €3,680 a month. If your earnings aren't steady, your application is likely to be turned down.

  • Local business owners: Business owners who mainly serve Portuguese customers. Your income must come from outside of Portugal.

Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa

The most important part of your application is the proof of income. Consular officers look over all of the financial information you give them very carefully.

  • Monthly income requirement: You must make at least €3,680 gross a month. This amount is based on the minimum wage going up to €920 in 2026.

  • Bank statements: Showing consistent deposit amounts for three to six months. Statements must exactly match the income listed on contracts and pay stubs.

  • Savings requirement: There should be at least €11,040 in your bank account. This is the same as twelve times the minimum wage in Portugal.

  • Freelancer documentation: Self-employment income can be shown by client contracts and invoices. You might also need business registration certificates to prove your identity.

  • Partner or spouse: A Portuguese bank needs an extra 50% of savings (€5,520). Your threshold goes up by €1,840 every month.

  • Dependent children: For each dependent child, you need an extra 30% of your savings (€3,312) per child. Your threshold goes up by €1,104 for each child you have.

Benefits of the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

The D8 visa gives remote workers a lot of benefits.

  • Tax Incentives:  Depending on your situation, many Digital Nomads have the option of applying for NHR 2.0, meaning signficant savings on earnings from Portugal and even better overseas earnings.

  • Schengen Zone access: You don't need a visa to travel freely between 27 European countries. You can spend 90 days in other member states every 180 days.

  • Two-year residence permit: Initial approval gives you long-term legal residency that can be renewed. After that, you can extend for three more years.

  • Permanent residency pathway: Apply after living in the country legally for five years. To be eligible for citizenship, you must meet language and integration requirements.

  • Family Reunification: Include spouses and dependent children in the same application. Family members can apply for a "Residence Visa for Accompanying Family Member."

  • Flexible stay requirements: Digital nomads need 183 days or 8 months more than their permit period. This means more than two years at first, then three years—much more flexible.

Required Documents Checklist

Getting the right paperwork together is very important for a successful application. At least two to four weeks before you need them, start getting your papers ready.

Essential Documentation

  • Valid passport: The passport must be valid for six months after the planned stay. Include copies of the pages with your biographical information and any previous visa pages.

  • Photos requirement: Send in two recent passport-sized photos that meet biometric standards. The pictures must have been taken in the last six months.

  • NIF (Tax ID): The NIF makes it possible for all financial activities to happen in Portugal. You need it to get a bank account and apply for residency.

  • Criminal Record Certificate: You need certificates from countries where you lived in the last five years. You have 90 days from the time you apply to get each certificate.

  • Housing evidence: A valid lease, hotel booking, or Airbnb reservation are all acceptable documents. A letter from a host in Portugal that has been signed is also fine.

  • Portuguese bank account: Local accounts were needed before AIMA could approve a residence permit. Most banks need NIF numbers before they can open any accounts.
