    How this D8 calculator works

The D8 (digital nomad / remote work) residence route requires proof of regular income from outside Portugal equal to four times the national minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage at €920, the figure is €3,680 per month.

    1. Base requirement: 4 × €920 = €3,680 for the main applicant.
    2. Family add-ons: +50% (€1,840) for a spouse or partner and +30% (€1,104) per dependent child, the approach most consulates apply.
    3. Comparison: your declared gross monthly income is compared to the total. The result shows the surplus or shortfall in euros and percent.

    Examples at the 2026 threshold

    HouseholdMonthly income needed
    Single applicant€3,680
    Couple€5,520
    Couple + 1 child€6,624
    Couple + 2 children€7,728

Good to know: thresholds are tied to the minimum wage and change each January. Consulates and AIMA can ask for more evidence than the minimum, so treat the result as a planning guide, not a decision.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum income for the Portugal D8 visa in 2026?

The D8 income test is four times the Portuguese national minimum wage. With the minimum wage at €920 per month in 2026, the threshold for a single applicant is €3,680 per month. It is recalculated each January when the minimum wage changes.

How much extra income is needed for a spouse or children?

Consulates commonly add 50% of the threshold for a spouse or partner (+€1,840) and 30% for each dependent child (+€1,104). This family uplift is applied in practice rather than spelled out in the statute, so confirm the current approach with the consulate that will handle your file.

    How is my income assessed?

Applicants are usually asked to show average monthly income over the last three months, backed by contracts, payslips or invoices, and bank statements whose deposits match the declared figure.

Do I also need savings for the D8?

Yes, applicants are generally expected to show savings. A figure of 12 times the minimum wage (€11,040 in 2026) is the commonly cited benchmark. This calculator focuses on the income test.

D7 or D8: which visa fits my income?

The D8 is for active remote income (an employee of a foreign company, or a freelancer with foreign clients). The D7 is for genuinely passive income such as pensions, rentals and dividends, at a much lower threshold of €920 per month. Remote salary does not qualify as passive income.

    • Foundational administration: NIF (tax number), Portuguese bank account opening, and NISS (social security number).
    • Professional and business support: consultations, tax consultation, business incorporation, a property finder and pay-as-you-go support.
    • Settling in: Portuguese language courses.

    Why we built these calculators

The most common question we hear from future residents is simple: “Do I earn or hold enough?” The answer depends on the minimum wage, your income type and your family, and the sources online disagree or go out of date every January. These tools put the current rules in one place so you can check your position before you spend money on an application.

How we keep the figures accurate

    • All thresholds are calculated from one value, the national minimum wage (€920 from 1 January 2026), so they cannot drift apart.
    • We review the calculators every January when the minimum wage changes, and whenever consular practice shifts. Last reviewed: November 2026.
    • Where a rule is applied in practice rather than written in the statute, such as the 50% and 30% family add-ons, we say so.
