How this D7 calculator works
The D7 residence route is built for people with regular income that does not depend on working in Portugal. The working benchmark is 100% of the national minimum wage for the main applicant, which is €920 per month in 2026.
- Required income: €920 for you, +50% (€460) for a spouse, +30% (€276) per child.
- Your income: pensions, rentals, dividends and royalties are added together and compared to the requirement.
- Bank balance: the required monthly income multiplied by 12 or 24 months gives the Portuguese bank balance to plan for.
Examples at the 2026 benchmark
| Household | Monthly income | 12-month balance |
|---|---|---|
| Single applicant | €920 | €11,040 |
| Couple | €1,380 | €16,560 |
| Couple + 1 child | €1,656 | €19,872 |
Good to know: thresholds are tied to the minimum wage and change each January. Consulates and AIMA can ask for more evidence than the minimum, so treat the result as a planning guide, not a decision.

Frequently asked questions
How much passive income do I need for the Portugal D7 visa in 2026?
The working benchmark is 100% of the Portuguese minimum wage for the main applicant: €920 per month in 2026. Add 50% for a spouse (+€460) and 30% per dependent child (+€276 each). A couple therefore needs about €1,380 per month.
How much savings do I need for the D7 visa?
A common benchmark is 12 months of the required income held in a Portuguese bank account: €11,040 for a single applicant in 2026. Many advisers recommend showing 24 months for a stronger file, but that is a recommendation, not a legal requirement.
What counts as passive income?
Pensions, rental income, dividends, royalties and similar recurring income that does not depend on you working. Salary from a remote job is active income and normally belongs under the D8 route instead.
Do I need a Portuguese bank account and NIF before applying?
In practice yes. A Portuguese tax number (NIF) and a funded Portuguese bank account are standard parts of a D7 application, so most applicants arrange them first.
Do these amounts change every year?
Yes. The D7 figures move with the national minimum wage, which is reviewed each January. Always check the figures for the year in which your application is assessed.

Why we built these calculators
The most common question we hear from future residents is simple: “Do I earn or hold enough?” The answer depends on the minimum wage, your income type and your family, and the sources online disagree or go out of date every January. These tools put the current rules in one place so you can check your position before you spend money on an application.
How we keep the figures accurate
- All thresholds are calculated from one value, the national minimum wage (€920 from 1 January 2026), so they cannot drift apart.
- We review the calculators every January when the minimum wage changes, and whenever consular practice shifts. Last reviewed: November 2026.
- Where a rule is applied in practice rather than written in the statute, such as the 50% and 30% family add-ons, we say so.
