Be Aware

Countries currently facing higher difficulty

We believe in being upfront. Some nationalities currently face a tougher path to Portugal — through embassy disruption, appointment bottlenecks, or higher Schengen visa refusal rates. We can still help, but it’s important to go in with realistic expectations. The figures below are from the European Commission’s 2024 Schengen statistics and change over time — contact us for the current situation for your country.

⚠️
Iran — embassy closure
Portugal’s official visa portal states that the Portuguese Embassy in Tehran is temporarily closed and visa processing is suspended. In practice, Iranian citizens applying from inside Iran may be blocked rather than simply delayed. Iran also recorded a 26% Schengen refusal rate in 2024. If you hold Iranian nationality, talk to us about alternative routes and application locations.
Bangladesh
Very high Schengen refusal rate — 54.9% in 2024.
Senegal
Very high Schengen refusal rate — 46.8% in 2024.
Nigeria
Very high Schengen refusal rate — 45.9% in 2024.
Congo-Brazzaville
High Schengen refusal rate — 43% in 2024.
Mauritania
High Schengen refusal rate — 32.5% in 2024.
Ecuador
High Schengen refusal rate — 29.6% in 2024.
Syria
High refusal rate — 27% in 2024 — plus conflict and security concerns.
Iran
Embassy in Tehran closed and processing suspended; 26% refusal rate in 2024.
Pakistan
Historically high refusal rates and strong scrutiny of funds, travel purpose, employment ties and return risk.

For context, the global Schengen refusal rate in 2024 was 14.8% — the nationalities above sit well above that average.

For Portugal specifically, the hold-up is often not outright refusal — it’s:

  • No appointment availability at the consulate
  • Embassy or consulate disruption
  • Long processing times after submission
  • Extra checks on funds, income source, family ties and travel purpose
  • AIMA delays after arrival on a D visa
  • Residence-permit appointments sometimes scheduled up to six months after the D visa expires
