Residency & Citizenship

Does this course satisfy Portuguese residence or citizenship language requirements?

Not by itself. Portuguese is not required for an ordinary temporary residence permit, while permanent residence requires proof of knowledge of basic Portuguese. AIMA accepts several forms of evidence, including qualifying education certificates, recognised basic Portuguese certificates or tests, and an A2 or higher Portuguese as a Host Language certificate. For new naturalisation applications governed by Article 6(1) of the Nationality Law from 19 May 2026, applicants must meet the new language, culture, history, national-symbols, fundamental-rights and duties, and political-organisation knowledge requirements. Different nationality routes have different requirements, applications already pending on 19 May 2026 remain governed by the previous law, and the regulation defining the new tests had not yet been published as of October 2026. You do not need to pass a Portuguese language test simply to obtain an ordinary temporary residence permit.

Permanent Residence
Permanent residence requires proof of knowledge of basic Portuguese. AIMA accepts several forms of evidence, including qualifying education certificates, recognised basic Portuguese certificates or tests, and an A2 or higher Portuguese as a Host Language certificate.

Citizenship
For new naturalisation applications governed by Article 6(1) from 19 May 2026, the law requires knowledge of Portuguese language and culture, history and national symbols, fundamental rights and duties, and the political organisation of the State. Other nationality routes have their own requirements, and applications pending on 19 May 2026 remain governed by the previous law.

What certificate do I receive after completing the course?

You receive a Visas.pt course completion certificate after finishing the A1 and A2 programme. This certificate records completion of the course, but it is not by itself official proof of A2 for permanent residence or citizenship purposes. For permanent residence, recognised evidence can include CIPLE or an eligible A2 or higher Portuguese as a Host Language certificate. These can also evidence Portuguese-language knowledge where applicable, but applicants governed by the new 2026 Nationality Law must separately satisfy the law's additional knowledge requirements under the rules applicable to their nationality route.
