Schooling is one of the first questions for families relocating to Portugal. Public schools are open to foreign children and offer Portuguese language support. Test what you know about enrolment.
Schooling is compulsory from age 6 to 18. Children who turn 6 by 15 September start first grade that school year.
The education framework law describes basic education as universal, compulsory and free. Ask the school about any secondary-level costs, meals or transport.
Enrolment is done online on the Portal das Matrículas. Parents who cannot sign in can enrol in person at the school serving their area of residence.
The enrolment rules do not require a residence permit for the child or parents. A NIF is requested only if one has been assigned.
Children with foreign schooling can enrol outside the normal periods if a place exists in a class that has already been formed.
Equivalence of foreign studies is requested free of charge at the school, and the child is enrolled conditionally while it is processed. Families pay only for legalisation and translations.
Pupils take a placement test and receive Portuguese as a Non-Native Language (PLNM) support at their level, from zero to C1.
Public-school textbooks are free through vouchers. Guardians register at manuaisescolares.pt or the Edu Rede Escolar app using a NIF; books are returned at the end of the year except in the first cycle.
This quiz is general information based on Portuguese rules in force on the review date above, not legal advice. Immigration thresholds change every January with the minimum wage, and laws change often. Confirm your case with a lawyer before applying.
