The D2 Visa is Portugal's long-stay visa for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and business founders who want to operate a business within the Portuguese economy.
The D2 Visa (Visto de Residência para Exercício de Actividade Profissional Independente ou para Imigrante Empreendedor) is designed for non-EU nationals who want to live in Portugal and run a business, work as a freelancer with Portuguese clients, or found a new company in Portugal.

The D2 differs from the D8 in a critical way: the D8 requires all income to come from outside Portugal, while the D2 specifically permits and anticipates working for Portuguese clients and operating within the Portuguese economy.
The D2 has the highest rejection rate (18%) of any standard long-stay visa type we handle, primarily because consulate officers assess business plan viability subjectively. A professionally prepared business plan significantly improves approval prospects.
Processing time: median 3.9 months from consulate application to visa issuance, based on Visas.pt 2025–2026 case data.
