Portugal D6 Visa | Family Reunification for Non-EU Families | Visas.pt

The D6 Visa is Portugal's family reunification visa for the spouses, children, and dependent parents of non-EU nationals who hold a Portuguese residence permit.

Also known as: Visto D6 (Reagrupamento Familiar)

The D6 Visa (Visto de Residência para Reunificação Familiar) allows family members to join a non-EU primary residence permit holder in Portugal. If you hold a D7, D8, D2, or other non-EU residence permit, your family members can apply for the D6 to join you.

Who can apply for a D6:

  • Spouse or registered partner of the permit holder
  • Dependent children under 18 (or under 26 if in full-time education)
  • Dependent parents (proof of financial dependency required)

"Dependent" in Portuguese law means financially dependent on the primary permit holder. For parents, you must demonstrate financial dependency — typically through bank transfers showing support, or evidence that the parent's income is below the Portuguese minimum wage in their country of residence.

The D6 is different from the EU Family Member residence permit (which uses EU law and applies to non-EU family members of EU citizens in Portugal). The D6 applies specifically to non-EU families of non-EU permit holders.

After the D6 visa is issued, family members follow the same AIMA biometrics process as the primary applicant and receive their own residence permits with the same rights: to live, work, and study in Portugal.
