Portugal Residence Permit | After Your Visa — What Comes Next | Visas.pt

A Portuguese residence permit (Autorização de Residência) is the card issued by AIMA after you arrive in Portugal on a long-stay visa and complete your biometrics appointment.

Also known as: Autorização de Residência

A Portuguese residence permit (Autorização de Residência) is the official document that confirms your legal right to reside in Portugal beyond the validity of your entry visa. It takes the form of a biometric card issued by AIMA after you complete your biometrics appointment.

The residence permit process:

1. Arrive in Portugal on your approved long-stay visa

2. Book a biometrics appointment via the Agendamento Única portal

3. Attend your AIMA biometrics appointment (fingerprints + photo)

4. Wait for AIMA to process and produce your card (2–8 months depending on regional office)

5. Collect your card from AIMA or receive it by post

Your residence permit is initially issued for 2 years, then renewed for 3 years (then 5 years for permanent residency). Renewals must be initiated before the current permit expires — late renewal can create legal complications.

What your residence permit allows:

  • Unrestricted right to live and work in Portugal
  • Visa-free travel within the Schengen Area
  • Access to Portuguese public services (SNS healthcare, public education)
  • The right to bring family members through family reunification (D6)
  • After 5 years: eligibility to apply for permanent residency and citizenship
