CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the A2-level Portuguese language certification required for Portuguese citizenship applications.
The CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira — Initial Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language) is an exam administered by the Camões Institute that certifies A2-level proficiency in Portuguese. It is required when applying for Portuguese citizenship by naturalisation after 5 years of legal residency.
The A2 level (on the Common European Framework of Reference, or CEFR) is an elementary level — you can understand basic phrases, introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, and communicate on familiar everyday topics. It is achievable with dedicated study over a few months for most learners.
The exam tests four skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking (oral interaction), and writing. The oral component is often the most challenging for learners who have studied Portuguese mainly through reading.
Exam sessions are held at Camões Institute-authorised exam centres in Portugal and at Portuguese cultural centres and embassies worldwide. Results are issued within approximately 2 months of the exam date.
Our A2 Portuguese Language Course (50 lessons with a qualified teacher, €297) is designed specifically to prepare clients for the CIPLE exam. We recommend starting the course early in your residency period — ideally within the first year — so language preparation runs in parallel with the 5-year residency requirement.
Our Portuguese immigration lawyers handle this for clients remotely. Free 15-minute consultation — no obligation.
