Portuguese citizenship by naturalisation requires 5 years of legal residency, an A2 Portuguese language certificate (CIPLE exam), and demonstration of ties to the Portuguese community.
Portuguese citizenship (cidadania portuguesa) can be obtained through several routes:
1. By naturalisation (naturalização): After 5 years of legal residency in Portugal. Requirements: valid residence permit for 5 years, no criminal convictions with a sentence of 3+ years, A2 Portuguese language certificate (CIPLE exam), and demonstration of ties to the Portuguese community.
2. By descent (jus sanguinis): If you have a Portuguese parent or grandparent (in some cases great-grandparent under Sephardic Jewish ancestry rules), you may be eligible for citizenship without living in Portugal.
3. By marriage or civil partnership: After 3 years of marriage or civil partnership with a Portuguese citizen, provided you also meet the residency requirements.
The 5-year clock for naturalisation starts from the date your first residence permit is issued — not from when you first arrived or when you obtained your visa. For Golden Visa holders, the clock starts from the first ARI permit issuance date.
Portuguese citizenship gives full EU citizenship rights: the right to live and work in any EU member state, an EU/Portuguese passport (one of the most powerful in the world for travel), and full voting rights in Portugal.
The A2 language test (CIPLE exam) is often underestimated. We recommend beginning Portuguese language study early in your residency — our 50-lesson A2 course (€297, included free in both packages) is designed specifically to prepare for the CIPLE exam.
