Fiscal Representative Portugal | What It Is and When You Need One | Visas.pt

A fiscal representative is a Portuguese resident appointed to act on behalf of a non-EU national for tax purposes in Portugal — traditionally required for NIF registration before residency.

Also known as: Representante Fiscal

A fiscal representative (representante fiscal) is a person or company resident in Portugal who is legally appointed to represent a non-EU national for tax purposes. Historically, Portuguese tax law required all non-EU nationals living outside Portugal to have a fiscal representative before they could obtain a NIF.

In practice, this requirement is primarily relevant for in-person NIF applications at a Finanças office. Our remote NIF service (€95) uses a different legal mechanism — a power of attorney (procuração) given to our lawyers — to obtain the NIF without requiring a traditional fiscal representative. The NIF is then associated with your name and passport, and the fiscal representative relationship ends once you establish Portuguese tax residency.

Once you are physically resident in Portugal (after arriving on your long-stay visa and registering your address), you are no longer required to maintain a fiscal representative — you are directly responsible for your own Portuguese tax obligations.
