NIF Number Portugal | What It Is, How to Get It Remotely | Visas.pt

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's 9-digit tax identification number. It is required for virtually all financial and legal activity in Portugal, including visa applications.

Also known as: Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF)

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal — Tax Identification Number) is a unique 9-digit number assigned to every individual and entity by the Portuguese tax authority (Finanças/AT). It is one of the first things you need when planning to move to Portugal.

You need a NIF to:

  • Open a Portuguese bank account
  • Sign a rental contract or purchase property
  • Apply for a long-stay visa (most consulates require it)
  • File Portuguese income tax (IRS)
  • Register a business in Portugal
  • Access healthcare via the SNS (public health system)
  • Receive income in Portugal

Who needs a NIF: everyone who conducts any financial or legal activity in Portugal — EU and non-EU nationals alike. Even EU citizens exercising free movement rights need a NIF.

How to get a NIF remotely: Visas.pt obtains NIF numbers for EU and non-EU applicants entirely remotely via a certified video call. Our lawyers authenticate your identity, submit the application to Finanças, and typically receive your NIF within 1–3 business days. Cost: €95 per person.

The NIF is included in both the Complete Visa Package (€1,595) and Complete Visa Package Plus (€2,810) at no extra charge.
