VFS Global is a third-party company contracted by the Portuguese government (and many other governments worldwide) to handle the administrative processing of visa applications at visa application centres (VACs).

In practice, this means that in many countries, you do not submit your D7, D8, or D2 visa application directly to the Portuguese consulate — instead, you book an appointment at a VFS Global centre, where your documents are received, checked for completeness, and forwarded to the Portuguese consulate for the actual decision.

What VFS does:

• Receives your visa application documents
• Checks that all required documents are present (not whether they are approved)
• Takes your biometric data (fingerprints and photo) for the visa application itself
• Forwards the complete file to the Portuguese consulate
• Returns your passport with the visa decision

What VFS does NOT do:

• Make any decision on your visa application (decisions are made by the consulate)
• Provide legal advice on your application
• Guarantee or predict outcomes
