Who can claim Portuguese citizenship through their family?
Visas.pt's Portuguese citizenship by descent service is for people who may qualify through a Portuguese parent or qualifying Portuguese grandparent, with support starting from €1,595. Child of a Portuguese Parent
A person born abroad to a Portuguese mother or father can qualify for Portuguese nationality by origin when the statutory conditions and registration requirements are satisfied.
Grandchild of an Original Portuguese Citizen
A grandchild can have a direct statutory nationality route where the Portuguese grandparent was Portuguese by origin, did not lose that nationality and the applicant satisfies the current legal requirements.
Great-Grandparent or More Distant Ancestor
More distant Portuguese ancestry does not automatically create the parent or grandparent route. A separate naturalisation provision can apply in some cases and may require legal residence in Portugal.

What is Portuguese citizenship by descent?
Citizenship by descent is based on a qualifying Portuguese family connection rather than first completing an ordinary residence visa route. Parent and grandparent applications have different legal tests, and more distant ancestry should not be treated as if it created the same entitlement.
Portuguese parent A child of a Portuguese citizen can have nationality by origin through the applicable declaration or registration procedure.
Portuguese grandparent A grandchild of an original Portuguese citizen can qualify subject to the current statutory conditions.
More distant ancestry A great-grandparent or more distant ancestor normally requires analysis of a different naturalisation route rather than a direct parent or grandparent claim.
Civil registry process Nationality applications are handled through Portuguese registry authorities, not through AIMA or VFS.
Portuguese Parent
Can I get Portuguese citizenship if my parent is Portuguese?
Yes. If you were born abroad and your mother or father is Portuguese, Portuguese nationality law provides a route to nationality by origin. The Portuguese parent's nationality and the legal parent-child relationship must be properly established in the civil records.
One Portuguese parent is enough
You do not need both parents to be Portuguese. A Portuguese mother or father can provide the legal basis for the route.
Birth abroad is allowed
Being born outside Portugal does not prevent an eligible child of a Portuguese citizen from using the nationality route.
No prior Portuguese residence
The direct child route is based on parentage and does not generally require you to live in Portugal before applying.
Registry records must connect
The birth and nationality records must establish the Portuguese parent's status and the applicant's legal relationship to that parent.

Can I get Portuguese citizenship through a grandparent in 2026?
Yes, but the grandchild route changed on 19 May 2026. The applicant must have at least one grandparent of original Portuguese nationality who did not lose that nationality, declare the wish to become Portuguese, show effective ties to the Portuguese national community and satisfy the additional requirements now applied by the amended Nationality Law.

Important 2026 point: older guidance saying that basic Portuguese or another simple proof of connection is enough is no longer a complete description of the grandchild route. The existing Nationality Regulation provides the A2 language benchmark, but as of 3 October 2026 the implementing regulation defining the new culture, history, civic and political knowledge requirements had not yet been published.
More Distant Ancestry
Can I claim Portuguese citizenship through a great-grandparent?
A Portuguese great-grandparent does not normally give you the same direct nationality route available to a child or qualifying grandchild. The current law contains a separate naturalisation route for certain third-degree descendants of original Portuguese citizens, so the legal basis and residence history need to be checked separately.

What changed in Portuguese nationality law in May 2026?
Organic Law 1/2026 entered into force on 19 May 2026 and changed several nationality requirements. For grandchild applications, it added the broader language, cultural, historical, civic and democratic requirements incorporated through Article 6(1)(c) to (h).
