NIF Number Portugal FAQs | Get Your Tax ID | Visas.pt

Everything you need to know about getting a NIF number in Portugal — what it is, how to get it remotely, costs, and required documents.

A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax identification number. It is required for virtually all legal and financial activities in Portugal: opening a bank account, signing a rental agreement, buying property, filing taxes, getting a SIM card, and applying for a residency visa. You need a NIF before most other steps in your Portugal relocation.
Get your NIF number

Yes. Our Portuguese lawyers can obtain your NIF remotely through a video call. Your documents are authenticated digitally by a licensed attorney acting as your fiscal representative. This is the fastest and most convenient method for people who have not yet moved to Portugal.
Get your NIF remotely today

You will need a valid passport, proof of address in your home country (a recent utility bill or bank statement is usually sufficient), and contact details. If applying remotely, our lawyers will guide you through the authentication process during a short video call. The entire remote process typically takes 1–3 business days.
Start your NIF application

Obtaining a NIF number through the tax office (Finanças) is free if you do it in person in Portugal. However, the remote service — where a Portuguese lawyer obtains it on your behalf with a power of attorney — carries a professional fee. Our pricing is transparent and includes all legal costs. See our NIF service page for current rates.
