Portugal Immigration Fees Increased in 2026: What You Need to Know | Visas.pt

If you are planning to move to Portugal, your costs have changed. AIMA, Portugal's immigration authority, updated its official fee table in March 2026. This update affects almost every visa and residency process, including residence permits, renewals, family reunification, and investment routes.

The key change is simple. Most government fees have increased by around 25 percent. This means the overall cost of relocating is now higher than it was before, even if your visa strategy has not changed.  Here's a fee calculator to assist you understanding what your fees will be. We focus on D2, D3, D6, and D8 visa costs but for a complete list of fees for other government services, scroll further down the page.

Want to book a free consultation to discuss your situation?  Click here.

The calculator will show all the amounts you have to pay over your stay in Portugal.  Of course these fees are not all paid at the same time, they are often paid at 3 years in between each stage, and some aren't paid at all. For example, unless you want to pay for permanent residency or citizenship, you don't have to pay for this stage.

Step 1 — AIMA submission channel

The 25% discount applies only to AIMA fees (Stages 2–5). Consulate and VFS fees are unaffected.

Step 2 — Select visa type
Select a category and visa type above to see the fee breakdown

When you move to Portugal, you deal with two types of costs. First, there are government fees set by AIMA. These are fixed and apply to everyone. Second, there are service fees charged by lawyers, advisors, or platforms like Visas.pt. The government portion is mandatory and cannot be reduced or negotiated.

For most people applying for a D7 or D2 visa, the standard residence permit fees are now higher. A typical first residence card involves a fee for processing and a fee for issuing the permit. When combined, this creates a noticeable increase compared to previous years. Renewals, which many people used to treat as a minor administrative step, now represent a more significant ongoing cost.

Where people often underestimate costs is in the details. If you apply as a family, each person pays their own government fees. Over time, renewal costs also add up. Additional charges can apply if you need to replace a residence card, update personal details, or request urgent processing.

Investment-based residency, often referred to as the Golden Visa or Residence Permit for Investment, is in a different category. These fees are significantly higher and have also increased under the new table. Both initial applications and renewals require substantial government payments per applicant, including family members.

Portugal remains one of the most attractive relocation options in Europe. The lifestyle, safety, and residency pathways still make it a strong choice. However, it is no longer a low-cost option. If you plan ahead and understand the fee structure, you can avoid surprises and make informed decisions.
