A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax identification number. It is required for virtually all legal and financial activities in Portugal: opening a bank account, signing a rental agreement, buying property, filing taxes, getting a SIM card, and applying for a residency visa. You need a NIF before most other steps in your Portugal relocation.

NHR was Portugal's preferential tax regime offering a flat 20% tax rate on Portuguese-source income and exemptions on most foreign income for 10 years. The original NHR regime ended for new applicants on 31 December 2023. A successor programme called IFICI (Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation) launched in 2024, with different qualifying criteria. Our tax lawyers can assess whether you qualify.

You become a tax resident in Portugal if you spend more than 183 days in the country within a calendar year, or if you have a habitual residence (a home) available to you in Portugal at any point during the year. Tax residency triggers an obligation to declare your worldwide income to the Portuguese tax authority (AT).

Portugal is one of the most affordable Western European countries. A comfortable single-person lifestyle outside Lisbon typically costs €1,500–€2,500/month including rent. In Lisbon or Cascais, budget €2,500–€4,000/month. The Algarve and smaller cities are significantly cheaper. Healthcare, groceries, dining, and utilities are notably lower than in the UK, USA, or northern Europe.

The D8 Visa (Digital Nomad Visa) is for remote workers and freelancers who earn income from clients or employers outside Portugal. You must prove a monthly income of at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage (~€3,040/month). Applications are processed at the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence.

Yes. Portugal has double taxation agreements (DTAs) with over 70 countries, including the USA, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, and most EU member states. These treaties determine which country has the right to tax specific types of income and prevent you from paying tax twice on the same income. Our tax lawyers advise on your specific treaty position.

Portugal has a public National Health Service (SNS) which new residents can access once they have obtained their residency permit and registered at a local health centre. Quality is generally good, though some areas have long wait times. Most expats complement SNS access with private health insurance (€50–€200/month) for faster appointments and English-speaking doctors.

Processing times vary significantly by consulate location. Some cities process applications in 2–3 months while others have backlogs of 6–12 months. After entering Portugal, you must schedule an AIMA appointment to receive your residence permit. Our lawyers help you prepare a complete, error-free application to avoid delays.

Obtaining a NIF number through the tax office (Finanças) is free if you do it in person in Portugal. However, the remote service — where a Portuguese lawyer obtains it on your behalf with a power of attorney — carries a professional fee. Our pricing is transparent and includes all legal costs. See our NIF service page for current rates.

The most common reasons are: insufficient or incorrectly documented income, missing or expired documents, incomplete application forms, lack of ties to home country, and failure to demonstrate genuine intent. Working with a licensed Portuguese immigration lawyer dramatically reduces rejection risk.
Book an immigration consultation
